Following Thursday's 6-3 win over the Florida Marlins, the St. Louis Cardinals informed Joe Mather that he would be sent down to AAA Memphis, completing the Cardinals 25-man roster.
Are you kidding me?
Infielder Brendan Ryan does not deserve to be anywhere near a Major League Baseball team. He has done nothing to prove he deserves to play at the MLB level
That's not even the funniest part about it. Ryan wasn't even one of the two players being considered to be sent down. Brian Barden edged out Mather because of his ability to play all three infield positions while Mather can only play third base.
Yes, that is a necessity since the Cardinals current second baseman is Skip Schumaker, a converted outfielder. But the Birds now have three players, including Joe Thurston, who can come off the bench and fill in for Schumaker.
Barden hit .386 with eight runs and three rbis in 44 at-bats compared to Ryan's .250 with 10 runs and five rbis in 40 at-bats. So, if it should have come down between anyone, it should have been Mather and Ryan.
And Ryan should have been the one sent down.
Yes, Mather struggled at the plate during the spring, hitting .227 with nine runs, 18 rbis and two home runs in 75 at-bats. But he has so much more potential than Ryan.
Mather has the potential to be a good offensive player at the Major League level and could be a starting outfielder for St. Louis in the coming years. Ryan will never be a starting infielder for a MLB team.
Just another move that makes me scratch my head.
