Cutler vs. Orton Picking Up Steam After Week 4 Wins. Are Possibilities Endless?

At times, I find myself peeking on the status of Kyle Orton as if he was an ex and as if his games are his Facebook status updates.  I really do not care what Orton does for the most part, because I'm happy with my new love interest quarterback, Jay Cutler.

Cutler, again, was better than good as he creeps toward being spectacular in the Chicago Bears' 48-24 win against the Detroit Lions.  He completed of 18 of 28 passes -- two of which went for touchdown scores.  One of said TD passes was a 4th-and-1 pitch-and-catch with tight end Greg Olson after Cutler also ran in for a 5-yard touchdown, flying through the air in way that resembled John Elway's Super Bowl scamper against the Green Bay Packers in 1998.

The 121 passing yards fall about 179 short of what I expected him to do, but in the end, it's about the wins right?

And that is exactly what people said about Kyle Orton's time in Chicago and what they're saying about his 4-0 start with the Denver Broncos.

For the second time this season, one of Orton's receivers turned an underthrown ball into a game-winning touchdown.  This time, it was Brandon Marshall, who came away with a pass intended for Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terrance Newman and ran it in 51 yards for a touchdown.  And unlike Cutler, Cowboys QB Tony Romo could not pull out a game-tying score as he continues to fail miserably and fall short of the lofty expectations laid at his feet by the mass media.

If there is such a thing as a group of "Football Gods," it seems as if they are sending the Bears and Broncos on a collision course that would culminate in a Super Bowl that will be filled with more drama than Eugene Robinson's night with a hooker cop.

Don't Fool Yourselves Denver, You Still Suck

Move over John Elway, Kyle Orton is coming through.

Orton's miraculous game-winning touchdown toss-tip-catch play, combined with Jay Cutler's struggles has got Broncos fans thinking about big things.  News flash to Denver, you scored 12 points against the Cincinnati Bengals.  In more breaking news, the Bengals suck, and if you're only getting 12 points against them, I'm not sure how you'll score against a real team.

There isn't a GM in any sport that wouldn't trade Orton and draft picks for Cutler.

So enjoy this week of triumph, Broncos fans.  You'll only get this feeling three more times this season.

What Can I Say About Kyle Orton? He's Just A Winner

Pardon my snicker upon finding out that Kyle Orton threw a game-winning 87-yard touchdown pass to beat the Cincinnati Bengals.

OK, so he didn't throw it the length of the field, but hey, a win is a win, right?

Broncos, Bears should make a match

This Jay Cutler-Denver Broncos fallout thing is serious, huh?

“I’m upset. I mean I’m really shocked at this point I could see why they want Cassel. I don’t know if they think I can’t run the system or I don’t have the skills for it. I just don’t get it. Or if they don’t think they can sign me with my next contract. I just don’t know what it is. I’ve heard I’m still on the trading block.”

As quick as I was to jump on the Tyler Thigpen bandwagon, I friggin hi-jumped on the Jay Cutler bandwagon.

Of course, then Vaughn McClure of The Trib went out of his way to tear down this blog before I could even get it started:

Although ESPN reported that an irate Jay Cutler wanted to be traded, don't expect anything to happen with the Denver Broncos quarterback and the Chicago Bears.

ESPN's Bill Williamson listed Chicago as a possible destination. But Cutler's agent, Bus Cook, told the Tribune he has heard nothing about any connection between his client and the Bears.

Quick. I can find a connection.

The Broncos and their quarterback are at odds. The Bears do not have a quarterback.

Found it!

And this, from McClure again, will always puzzle me about the Monstrosity of the Midway.

The Bears might bring in a veteran backup behind Kyle Orton, but it is highly unlikely they would trade for a bonafide starter such a Cutler. The organization already has expressed great support for Orton and doesn't want to betray him.

How about the betrayal of Bears fans, who haven't had a bonafide quarterback since Jim McMahon. And really, they haven't had a knock-out No. 1 stunner of a quarterback since Sid Luckman.

Don't know who Sid Luckman is? Kids, open your history books. Not those new, shiny books. I'm talking about the old ones falling apart at the seams.

Yeah, that one.

Making sense of nonsense with the Denver Broncos search for a new head coach

Denver Broncos v Carolina Panthers
The Monday after the NFL regular season ends is widely-known as "Black Monday" because it is the day in which several head coaches come into the office only to get whacked Tony Soprano style.

However, the biggest casualty of Black Monday did not come until that Tuesday when the Denver Broncos fired long-time head coach Mike Shanahan. He recorded a 146-98 record in Denver and won two Super Bowls with a little bit of help from Terrell Davis and a lot of help from John Elway.

Yet, after failing to make the playoffs this season after a monumental collapse the New York Mets would certainly be proud of, Shanahan was axed. Now when a firing of this takes place, management usually has an idea of a candidate currently (or soon to be) on the open market.

It is only a matter of time before that coach is put in front of a podium in front of an ESPNEWS crew to talk about how different his regime will be.

That man is Josh McDaniels, former New England Patriots offensive coordinator. Note, I said offensive coordinator.

First, McDaniels does not fit the bill as the big-name head coach expected to take that kind of job. And to spice things up a little bit, McDaniels' forte is offense, which is something the Broncos didn't have any trouble with at all this season. But when the defense nose-dives and allows points as if it were doing its best Detroit Lions impersonation, I am not quite sure McDaniels is the right hire at all.

To be fair, Tony Sparano, John Harbaugh and Mike Smith were not name hires that came under fire when they were hired by Miami, Baltimore and Atlanta, respectively. And all those teams made the playoffs and B-More is only a win away from the Super Bowl.

I won't count McDaniels out yet, but he will start at the bottom of the totem pole. Besides, I'm still waiting for a coach from the Bill Belichick Tree to win a big game.

Sure, Denver will probably score 60 points per game next season with Jay Cutler slinging the pigskin around to Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal in a system that made Matt Cassel a player worthy of the franchise tag. But they might give up 65 if Dre Bly and Champ Bailey don't get their act together.
